Musk has promised to transform Twitter into a common digital town square where a wide range of beliefs can be debated in a healthy manner, without resorting to violence. He has styled himself as a “free speech absolutist” and said he would reverse bans on suspended users, including former US President Donald Trump, who was excluded following the Capitol riot in January 2021.

During the BBC interview, he was told by the reporter that there was more hate speech on the platform since he took over. He challenged the reporter to show or give an example of hate speech on Twitter. The latter failed to do so.
