Malaysians Still Unable To Dispose Trash Properly

In Malaysia, trash disposal is still not a matter that is taken seriously. Despite laws that are clearly defined that many are not supposed to break them, there still are many that would continue to do so.

The rule states that our trash has to be separated according to the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Act. This rule states that household waste such as recyclable and non recyclable items are to be separated when thrown away.

Despite the widely held belief that properly disposing of waste is a matter of common sense, there is currently no legal requirement mandating it. Sadly, in Malaysia, there are still individuals who neglect to dispose of their waste in an appropriate manner, failing to show basic decency towards their community.

A netizen posted a video of a trash collector trying to do their job by placing the waste bin in the garbage truck, but it proves to be a challenging task as it appears that the garbage was not packed properly. This would then cause unnecessary difficulties to those working in said industry.

Twitter user umu @ummuatiahnazri stated, “Mak aku selalu ajar nak buang sampah, tapis buang air or kuah2 dalam sinki dulu, pastu guna double plastik. Benda tajam2 mcm kaca ke pisau ke balut dulu tebal2. Kita mudahkan kerja org, Allah akan mudahkan kerja kita.”

In English, she stated that her mom would regularly teach her on how to dispose of the waste properly. You’d need to filter the liquid remains in the sink first and proceed to wrap them up with double layered plastic bags. Sharp objects like a piece of broken glass or a knife are to be wrapped up properly. We need to help ease the jobs of others in order for us to lead a better life.

Another Twitter user sa @shireenma agreed with the post stating, “Sadly, this is one other education we lack! Tak tau guna tong sampah. Tak tau pakai proper trash bag! All this starts from home. Parents must be the role models to jaga sampah sekeliling outside of house and make it easy for the garbage collectors!”

To translate, she basically criticised those that do not know how to use trash bags and trash cans. Furthermore, she also emphasised that parents should teach their children to not scatter litter outside of the house as it would make the garbage collector’s job better.

Some disagreed on this statement as they have done everything possible for an efficient job but are still ignored by the authorities. Twitter user Afifah @afyfah_fauzi states, “Aku ni tak pernah tak letak dalam plastik hitam. Mesti letak dlm plastik hitam tapi tetap majlis daerah machang bodo aku ni tak kutip, buat buat tertinggal sampah. Celaka betul. Sampai tong sampah aku pun dia boleh ambik buang. Dah lah 1x seminggu je patut 2x seminggu.”

In lieu, she said that she has never thrown her trash away in a generic plastic bag as she uses the proper black trash bags. However, she complained that the local authorities do not make the effort in collecting her trash, they only collect them once a week and it should be done more efficiently if it's collected every two weeks.

Twitter user,  @brotulerz94 also disagreed with the tweet by stating, “Yang jadi masalahnya, sampah tu bukan kita yang buang. Sampah kita elok je letak dalam plastik. Bila kita buka penutup tengok dalam, ada sampah-sampah yang orang lain buang dalam tu. Nak salahkan siapa pun tak tahu siapa yang buang.”

He essentially stated that even if you pack your trash in the correct way, there will still be others that would do it the wrong way and everyone would share an equal blame. He then stated that if you were to point fingers to the wrongdoers it is not possible as there is no way to find out.
