Malaysia's Construction Research Institute (CREAM) and YTL Cement have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support the country's transition to sustainable construction.

The MoU will help to achieve construction excellence and promote sustainable practices in line with Malaysia's 2050 carbon-neutral aspiration.

Sustainable construction

YTL Cement will support CIDB's initiatives in developing the construction industry's workforce, research and innovation, and enhancing understanding of sustainable construction practices among industry players.

The collaboration between the government and industry will focus on three key areas: human resource development, research and development, and supporting the construction sector's transition to sustainable construction.

Joint training programmes for youths will be designed to be certified as concrete technicians, and a training syllabus for accreditation programmes of qualified personnel in operations will be developed.

Embodied carbon

The partnership will also allow access to YTL Cement's laboratory and testing facilities to conduct R&D on lower embodied carbon alternatives in materials and construction methods.

The MoU will increase awareness of the embodied carbon of the construction sector by providing channels for discussions and knowledge transfer among industry practitioners and experts.

Joint working committees will be formed to drive the initiatives under these three key areas. This collaboration will help to develop a socially and environmentally responsible industry and future-proof the construction sector in Malaysia.
