KUALA LUMPUR, 06 JULY 2022 - As part of its ongoing efforts in environmental conservation and promoting sustainability, Canon Marketing (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd adopted 35 trees in Taman Tugu, Kuala Lumpur with a total donation of RM56,000.

The adoption of the 35 trees is of special significance to Canon as the company is also celebrating its 35th anniversary of business establishment in Malaysia this year.

For the past 35 years, Canon has contributed to nation-building in Malaysia through various initiatives. Firmly committed to being a sustainable global imaging and technology powerhouse, Canon is no stranger to spreading awareness of the need for sustainable business operations and conservation of the environment.

The tree adoption was officiated at Taman Tugu on 2 July 2022 and was attended by Shunji Yoshikai, President and CEO of Canon Marketing Malaysia, Henry Ho, Finance Director of Canon Marketing Malaysia, Calvin Jacob, Executive Director of Taman Tugu and Tracey Surin, Head of Fundraising, Activation, and Communications of Taman Tugu as well as 60 Canon employees.

Canon staff and families created “Garden In A Bottle,” a self-watering plant system using upcycled materials.

In raising environmental awareness, Canon also partnered with two social enterprises to carry out workshops for staff. Through Me.reka, staff tried their hands at creating self-watering plant systems made from upcycled materials. On the other hand, Free Tree Society, which has been championing environmental stewardship in Malaysia, conducted the Taman Tugu FTS Nature Education Programme which provided hands-on guidance on gardening and the conservation of ecosystems and climate.

“Canon is always looking for new ways to show our support towards environmental conservation to realize United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals. This is the first time we embarked on a tree adoption initiative, and we are honoured to play a role in preserving the Taman Tugu forest park, one of Malaysia’s green assets and home to about 1,000 endangered tree species,” said Shunji Yoshikai.

Conservation via adoption

The tree adoption initiative is part of Canon’s One Canon One Tree programme which was established in 2016 to contribute to a low-carbon society. Since then, the company has planted over 8,000 trees including 511 trees as a food bank for rehabilitated Tapirs at the Sungai Dusun Wildlife Conservation Centre, Selangor.

Moving forward, the company will continue to engage and work together with other environmental protection groups to extend its commitment to preserving and protecting the biodiversity in Malaysia.
